Concussion Legislation Introduced
March 11, 2010

SB 456 “An Act Concerning Student Athletes and Concussion” has been introduced in the Connecticut General Assembly, by the Education Committee. The bill’s stated purpose is “to require coaches of intramural and interscholastic athletics to complete annual training regarding the recognition of and dangers associated with concussions; and to require that student athletes get medical clearance before returning to athletic activity after sustaining a concussion or head injury.”

The CATA has been among the groups working with Senate Majority Leader Martin Looney and Education Committee Co-Chair Senator Thomas Gaffey on this proposed bill.  A public hearing on the bill is scheduled for 3 pm on Wed. March 17 at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.  This coincides with CATA’s annual Hit the Hill activities that will take place that morning, starting at 9 a.m., in the 2nd floor atrium of the Legislative Office Building.

We will continue to keep you informed of developments with SB 456.

If you are interested in testifying in the public hearing, or know of a student-athlete, parent or other person who would like to testify, please contact any of the individuals listed below for more information, as well as for information on CATA Hit the Hill Day:
